I am a mainly self-taught artist coming from a background of compulsive crafting. I doodled, drew, and did origami, papermaking and embroidery throughout high school and college. I took some photography classes in college which honed my compositional skills. After graduation from Earlham College with a BA in International Studies (emphasis on Chinese language, Asian music and art history), I ended up putting art on the back burner for many years as I tried to be “practical” and earn a living through secretarial work. I still did crafting on the side, and in 1997, I received a henna kit for my birthday. I became totally obsessed with drawing the designs and learning as much about the art as I could. This grew into a side business and I juried into Spanish Village as a henna artist in 2006.
However, it was not in my nature to be “practical” and I quit the day job in 2015 to pursue henna full time. My painting grew organically from my henna work. At first I colored in henna designs with watercolors and pigments, later experimenting with collage elements. I started taking online classes from Miriam Schulman and learned even more techniques. I travelled to Sedona, Arizona to take a workshop from collage artist, Elizabeth St. Hilaire and learned her techniques for painting paper. I continue to experiment with different types of paper, mark-making and paper-making. My artistic totem animal is the magpie because I love bright colors and fun textures; I have accumulated quite the collection of paper for my collages, and see possibilities all around me. I juried into Spanish Village for collage art in March 2019.
In addition to doing henna at events, parties and on the Spanish Village patio and doing collage art commissions, I teach both henna and collage art at Bravo School of Art in South Park.
