Vicky DeLong began working with clay about thirty years ago. While living in Naples, Italy from 1983 through 1987, she had the opportunity to study at the Instituto della Porcellana e della Ceramica located on the grounds of the Royal Palace of Capodimonte). From the Italian masters of the institute, she learned techniques, which included making many types of flowers and leaves in the Capodimonte style, a tradition that dates back to the early 1700’s.Upon returning to the United States, Vicky worked with many techniques to enhance and combine with the ceramic processes she learned in Italy. She studied throwing on the potter’s wheel from an accomplished San Diego potter. Creating bowls and other forms became a necessary step in the development of her personal style.Vicky maintains an interest in architecture including the extraordinary style of Antonio Gaudí. She is captivated with texture, which is also seen in Gaudí’s work. The abstract and intricate forms are ones she has incorporated into her work of a hand built slab technique. To these forms she applies various patterns and textures and creates free form, architectural objects. Specifically these forms become vessels, baskets, wall and table vases. All of Vicky’s work is created in a studio at her home and in Studio 16B at the Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park.Vicky joined the Front Porch Gallery (Carlsbad, CA) staff as a Gallery Associate with her expertise of many years working as an arts administrator. She is also the Art Program Coordinator for Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation where she organizes fine art shows in their Visitor Center Art Gallery. Vicky has a sincere interest in the visual arts where she has curated many fine art exhibits in numerous venues across San Diego County in order to give the artists additional professional venues to exhibit their work.
